Rheumatic complaints among workers in iron foundries.

چکیده
Surveys of the prevalence and social effects of rheumatic diseases in several industries carried out by the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council's Industrial Survey Unit have indicated that, although the prevalence of rheumatic complaints varies between occupations, this variation does not seem to be related to the physical effort of the work involved (Anderson and Duthie, 1963; Partridge, Anderson, McCarthy, and Duthie, 1965). However, significant differences do apparently exist between industries, as was shown by the difference in the prevalence of rheumatic complaints between coal miners and dockyard workers (Anderson and Duthie, 1963). To explore further the relationship between the prevalence and the social and economic effects of rheumatism, these surveys have been extended to other industries. During the course of a pilot survey, it was noted that foundry workers had a higher complaint rate than other groups, although with the small numbers of men involved the significance of this difference was uncertain. For this reason a group of iron foundries was selected for more extended study. Iron foundries offered a selection of occupations demanding varying degrees of physical effort generally performed under difficult and changeable environmental corditiens.

The Industrial Survey Unit of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council since 1961 has undertaken broad surveys of the prevalence and social and economic effects of rheumatic complaints among workers in several industries and occupations. Previous communications have given the results of surveys of men working in a coal mine (Anderson, Duthie, and Moody, 1962) and a naval dockyard (Anderson and Duth...
متن کاملRisk of sarcoidosis and seropositive rheumatoid arthritis from occupational silica exposure in Swedish iron foundries: a retrospective cohort study
OBJECTIVE To study the impact of occupational silica exposure on the incidence rates of sarcoidosis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a cohort of exposed workers in Swedish iron foundries. DESIGN The prevalence of sarcoidosis and RA in a cohort of silica exposed workers was compared with the prevalence in the general Swedish population in this register study. A mixed model was used to calculat...

In a survey of health and environmental conditions in the Butterley Foundries (Keatinge and Potter, 1945) one of the principal health risks to which the workers were exposed was found to be pneumoconiosis, and it was estimated that the potential dust risk of fettlers was many times greater than that to which other workers in the foundries were exposed. Sixty foundry men, divided into broad occu...
متن کاملTwo Cases of Lung Cancer in Foundry Workers
BACKGROUND Iron and steel foundry workers are exposed to various toxic and carcinogenic substances including crystalline silica, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and arsenic. Studies have been conducted on lung cancer in iron and steel founding workers and the concentration of crystalline silica in foundries; however, the concentration of crystalline silica and cases of lung cancer in a single...

BACKGROUND Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been reported in several industries, including those of the aluminum production, coal gasification, coke production, iron and steel foundries, coal tar and related products, carbon black and carbon electrodes production. PATIENTS AND METHODS This paper reviews the results from cohort studies conducted on workers exposed to PAH...
